What is Icynene® spray foam made of and how does it work?

Icynene® spray foam is a water-blown form of insulation that contains neither toxic chemicals nor harmful elements such as urea-formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or synthetic blowing agents. It is made from recycled content for the lowest global warming potential. For more information, view our Icynene® spray foam insulation R values.

During the application process, Icynene® spray foam begins as a liquid before expanding from its original size to up to 100 times larger. Following this, the foam sets and hardens to form an airtight seal.

What is the difference between open and closed cell Icynene® spray foam?

There are two forms of Icynene® spray foam: open cell and closed cell.

Open cell Icynene® spray foam is suited to residential projects in roofs and lofts. It is a flexible, adaptable spray foam with a soft, open cell structure. This type of Icynene® spray foam is made up of larger air pockets, creating a breathable building structure.

Closed cell Icynene® spray foam is more appropriate for commercial projects, such as in warehouses and industrial buildings. This type of foam has a much denser structure because cells are pushed closely together. Consequently, there are no large air pockets which prevent any moisture or air passing through the foam. Due to its dense structure, closed cell Icynene® spray foam has a rigid composition.

Both open cell and closed cell Icynene® spray foam have their strengths, which can be taken full advantage of depending on the type of building you want to insulate.

Due to open cell Icynene® spray foam having a soft and flexible structure, this means it can move with seasonal building movement and long-term creep. As well as this, open cell foam promotes bi-directional drying, helping homeowners to notice and fix any leaks as soon as possible. If you are specifically looking for a form of insulation with sound-proofing properties, open cell is the option to go for.

Closed cell Icynene® spray foam is accredited by FEMA to be completely flood-resistant due to its ability to resist large amounts of water. Since it has a rigid structure, this type of foam spray foam can be administered at extremely low temperatures.

What are the benefits of using Icynene® spray foam?

  • Creates a sustainable air-tight seal to reduce heat loss

Icynene® spray foam is an exceptionally sustainable insulation material because it has a fantastic U value, which is the rate that heat is passed through a structure. Alongside this, Icynene® spray foam creates a complete airtight seal that fills every nook and cranny. This is what makes Icynene® such a high-performing material, due to its ability to drastically reduce heat loss and cut back on heating bills. Its sustainable properties mean Icynene® spray foam can significantly improve the energy efficiency of your home, helping to save up to 50% in energy.

  • Healthier and more comfortable living conditions

Due to its tight air seal, Icynene® spray foam has the power to make the air inside your home healthier, cleaner and more comfortable for occupants to live in. This is because allergens that can worsen respiratory problems cannot pass through the gaps, but Icynene® spray foam also prevents moisture from seeping in. As a result, damp and mould problems are much less likely to occur.

As well as this, Icynene® spray foam provides fantastic sound-proofing qualities to reduce the amount of outdoor noise being heard inside the home. With Icynene®, you can guarantee that your home will be a much more comfortable place to live with great airflow.

  • Reduce your carbon footprint

Icynene® spray foam not only improves the energy efficiency of your home, but it can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Icynene® contains no harmful toxins or gases and is composed of completely natural materials, making it one of the eco-friendliest ways to insulate your home. By installing Icynene® spray foam, you can contribute towards reducing CO2 emissions by thousands of tons each year.

How does Icynene® spray foam compare to other polyurethane foams?

Icynene® spray foam is hugely superior compared to other polyurethane foams on the market. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Icynene® spray foam contains zero harmful or toxic gases, whereas other polyurethane foams do. This makes it a much safer, and much more environmentally friendly alternative that is better suited to all types of buildings.
  • Icynene® insulation is very flexible, meaning it can fit into any space or crevice no matter how big or small. Other polyurethane foams are much more rigid, allowing air to pass through gaps that cannot be reached.
  • Polyurethane foams can pose the risk of letting in air and moisture if it has not been applied thick enough. Whereas, Icynene® promises reliability from the moment of application, ensuring all gaps are completely filled and creating an even application.
