Where Do You Lose the Most Heat in your Home?

About Icynene

Autumn is officially here and, as expected, the temperature has dropped – queue thick, wool jumpers and the heating being cranked up! Every year, energy bills seem to rise, but what if there is something that can be done to cut down the amount of energy being used?

A house could lose up to 35% of heat if it isn’t sufficiently insulated. Consider reviewing the insulation in place and learn more about the insulating quality of Icynene® spray foam insulation.

Discover the areas in the home where heat can escape – and how much.

  • Walls

Up to 35% of heat is lost through the walls of a building.

There are two ways to reduce this percentage by using spray foam insulation. Older homes can have solid walls that are void of the required level of insulation. Install foam insulation inside or outside of the wall to limit heat lost. Alternatively, for houses with cavity walls, put spray foam insulation in the void in the middle of the walls. Use Icynene® for cavity wall insulation as it doesn’t store moisture. This stops water infiltrating external walls, improving damp protection.

  • Roof

Up to 25% of heat escapes through roofs absent of insulation.

As a quarter of the heat lost is through the ceiling, it’s recommended that the current roof insulation is reviewed to cut spend on energy bills. Icynene® fills every possible gap or space and expands to 100x its size, ensuring no heat can escape. Make sure your insulation meets thickness regulations.

  • Floor

Around 10% of energy is lost through the floor.

Icynene® closed cell foam is the best foam insulation for underfloor insulation, especially for concrete flooring. It has a rigid construction which prevents heat escaping and it has the highest water resistance.

  • Windows & doors

Over 15% heat lost.

Whilst this can’t always be prevented, double-glazed windows are effective at limiting heat loss, and under door draft stoppers are a low-cost means to seal homes.

Insulating a home with spray foam insulation affords many benefits to the homeowner. Not only will foam insulation refrain heat from escaping during the colder months, but it will keep homes cool during warmer months. Icynene® prevents air drafts infiltrating the home through the exterior walls; this also minimises pollution in the home. This cuts costs associated with using cooling and heating methods such as fans or heaters. Energy bills will be reduced, and the house be more energy efficient.
